Hoggard falls in season opener

Posted Sunday, August 21, 2011 by Tim Hower
After receiving a bye in the first round of the Port City Invitational, Hoggard suffered a 7-2 setback to Millbrook in the semifinals on Saturday morning.
Playing without two starters, the Vikings struggled to stay competitive with a very talented Millbrook squad.
Junior McKayla Zupan earned a three-set victory at No. 1 singles and teammed with Ellie Scialabba for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Hoggard (0-1) was scheduled to play New Hanover in the third-place match later in the day, but rained forced the match to be postponed with the Wildcats leading 4-1. Five points are needed to win a match, so it will not count against either teams' record.
The Vikings have a week off before hosting Terry Sanford on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
