The Hoggard Vikings won both the singles and doubles titles in the 4A East Regional on Saturday, making the first time a Hoggard tennis team has swept the individual regional titles.
McKayla Zupan took the individual crown with a 7-6(6) 6-0 win against Tyler Baker of Terry Sanford, while Anna Hodges and Caitlin Neal downed the Terry Sanford doubles team of Emma Caroline Edge and Laura Hatcher 6-3, 6-4.
“It’s the fisrt time in Hoggard tennis history that we’ve swept,” Hoggard head coach Michael Bowen said. “It’s a great day for Hoggard tennis.”
Zupan’s win was relatively expected, but Hodges and Neal had to upset the No. 1 seed in the regional in the championship match.
“It was what McKayla had expected, her goal was to win regionals,” Bowen said. “The doubles title was really a special win. We weren’t especially sure we could win.”
