Zupan finishes as state runner-up

Posted Sunday, October 30, 2011 by Tim Hower
Junior McKayla Zupan is already one of the best players to ever play at Hoggard. She proved why during the 4A state championship, rolling into the finals and finishing as the state runner-up.
Zupan became just the third player in school history to reach the state semifinals in singles with her two straight set wins on Friday, Oct. 28. Emily Kohl reached the semifinals in 1997 and 1998, but failed to reach the finals both times. Kaitlin Burns won a pair of state titles in singles in 2006 and 2007.
Zupan faced a stiff challenge in the semifinals, facing Broughton's Sarah King. King rolled in the first set, winning 6-1, but Zupan rallied to take the finals two sets 7-6, 6-2.
In the finals, Zupan faced freshman Hannah Templeton. Templeton played outstanding, being defensive when she needed to and offensive when the opportunity presented itself. She won 6-1, 6-4.
Not only did Zupan become just the second player in Hoggard history to reach the state finals, she is only the third player in New Hanover County history to advance that far. Laney's Chris Menocal lost in the finals in 1992.
