Viking fall in season opener

    Cape Fear Academy won its second consecutive match to begin the season with a 6-3 victory at Hoggard on Wednesday.
     Freshman Kara Ferner won in singles and doubles in her debut for Hoggard (0-1), which hosts East Duplin in the opening round of the Port City Invitational on Friday at 4 p.m. Senior captain Anna Hodges was the other singles winner. She downed Brooke Graham 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1.
     Ferner downed Alyx Copley 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and then teamed with Dallas Barnhardt to earn an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
