Posted Wednesday, September 03, 2014 by Tim Hower
Captain Melanie Post set the tone early with an easy win at No. 1 singles, and Hoggard won at No. 3 doubles to claim a 5-4 victory over New Hanover on Tuesday afternoon at the Jeff Holcomb Tennis Complex.
Post defeated defending conference player of the year, Taylor Walicki, 6-2, 6-1 to put the Vikings (4-2, 3-0 Mideastern) out in front. Kara Ferner and Catie Dull had straight set wins at No. 2 and 6. Hannah Marable gave Hoggard a 4-2 lead after singles with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory at No. 5.
Needing just one doubles win, the Vikings duo of Dallas Barnhardt and Lauren Traflet sealed the match with an 8-1 decision at No. 3 doubles.
Hoggard travels to Cape Fear Academy for a nonconference showdown on Friday at 4 p.m.
