Hoggard loses first conference match

Hoggard dropped its first Mideastern Conference match of the season after Laney won a pair of doubles matches to claim a 5-4 victory Thursday at the Jeff Holcomb Tennis Complex.


Both teams, along with New Hanover, now sit in a three-way tie atop the Mideastern Conference standings.


The teams split the six singles matches. Hoggard (5-4, 4-1) won at No. 1, 2 and 4. Melanie Post earned a 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 win at the top spot.


The Buccaneers captured a pair of three-set matches. Sydney Young won 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 at No. 5 and Jessica Tucker won 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 6.


Laney won at No. 2 doubles to take a 4-3 lead and won 9-7 at No. 1 to claim the win. The Vikings took No. 3 by an 8-6 score.
