Post and Ferner claim 4A East Regional title

Posted Saturday, October 18, 2014 by Tim Hower
Melanie Post and Kara Ferner won the doubles crown at the 4A East Regional tennis tournament Saturday at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex.

The Vikings have claimed the doubles title in three of the past five seasons. Post and Ferner join Anna Hodges and Caitlin Neal (2011) and McKayla Zupan and Elizabeth Hodges (2010).

In the semifinals, Post and Ferner dropped the first set in a tiebreaker against Laney's Erin Nesselroade and Anna Porcelli in a rematch of last week's Mideastern Conference title match.

The Hoggard duo bounced back to win the second set 6-3, but they trailed 5-2 in the final set. The match eventually went to a deciding tiebreaker where the Vikings won 9-7.

In the finals, Post and Ferner downed another Laney team, Suzie Schoolfield and Kendall Hanks, 6-3, 6-1.

Post and Ferner qualified for next weekend's state tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Friday at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.
